An acute knee pain lasts only for a few days but a chronic knee pain will constantly bother you for many months.

Causes of Chronic Knee Pain

There are different forms of arthritis which affect the knee joint. Osteoarthritis is the most typical among them which is caused as a result of degeneration of your cartilage present in the joint. It is found more in middle aged as their cartilage goes away due to aging. This chronic knee pain is at its worst in the morning but decreases in the later part of the day. It makes moving up and down the steps very difficult. Rheumatism and gout are also types of arthritis which could affect knee joint and also other joints on the body.

Illiotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS)

Iliotibial band is a thick fibrous ligament tissue that extends from hip bone towards the shin bone passing in the outer portion of the knee. It facilitates straightening of the knee joint. When it is overused, it becomes tight and rubs against the knee bone. Subsequently, a burning pain in thigh and knee is often experienced. Here, the original source of the pain is the knee nonetheless it tends to progress to the outer part of the thigh. Long distance runner are highly vulnerable to iliotibial band syndrome.

Other Causes

There are other causes of chronic knee pain like when a cyst is formed in the back of the knee because of a meniscal tear and is also known as Baker’s cyst. If your size of the cyst is small, it will not create any painful symptoms but when it grows larger, and it creates a pain in the back of the knee that could even restrict knee movements. There’s also Knee bursitis which can occur when bursae sac present in front of the knee cap become inflamed. It is mostly triggered by the physcial trauma for the knee.
