Causes of Ear Pain in Children

Ear pain in children is mostly caused by infection in the middle ear or otitis media in medical terms. This condition is usually triggered by common cold, cough or allergy. This is due to the fact that common cold, cough or allergy can cause a blockage in the eustachian tube which connects from the middle ear to the back of the throat. When there is a blockage in the eustachian tube, it causes fluild to build up which leads to the multiplication of bacteria in the middle ear, causing ear infection and earache.

Outer ear infection or otitis externa in medical terms can also lead to pain in the ear. This condition is popularly known as the swimmers ear and this occurs when water is trapped in the ear canal, causing bacteria to enter and multiply, thereby leading to ear infection and pain.

There are other factors that can cause ear pain apart from infections like, pain in tooth or throat can sometimes radiate to the ear, others causes include perforation or rupture of the ear drum, accumulation of ear wax in the ear canal, temporomandibular joint disorder, tonsilitis, mumps, sinus infection, sore throat, ulcers in the mouth and tongue.
