Groin Strain Symptoms

Groin strain is a very painful experience, it’s a condition that affects the groin region thereby leading to different degrees of muscle strain. This muscles are known as adductor muscles and are found in the groin region. They are attached to other muscles and tendons from the hips to the inside thighs and the pelvic region. The adductor muscles is responsible for the movement of the legs and stability in the hips. When there is a strain in the muscles, tendons or hip bone, it can affect the leg, thereby leading to groin strain symptoms. Some of these symptoms will be discussed below.

Groin Strain Symptoms

This condition is common among athletes or sports people and surfaces when there is not enough warm up exercises. Other causes of groin strain symptoms includes a sudden or rapid movement. There are three grades of groin strain, the first grade is a minor state which affects only the muscles and tendons, the second grade is slightly intense, affecting the muscles, tendons and bone, the third grade is a chronic state which affects the muscles and tendons in a terrible way and sometimes leads to ruptures. There are different groin strain symptoms for every stage, these symptoms are discussed below

Grade One

  • Feeling of pain in the groin region while running
  • Affected areas are tender when touched
  • Feeling of a mild discomfort in the leg and thigh region
  • Feeling of tightness in the groin muscles

Grade Two

  • Muscle Pain when stretching
  • Weakness of the body
  • Contraction of leg muscles thereby leading to pain
  • Pain when running or walking
  • A sharp, sudden, shooting pain in thighs and legs.
  • Bruising, swelling or inflammation on legs and groin region
  • Severe tightnening of the groin muscles

Grade Three

  • Swelling or bruising all over the inner thighs
  • Unable to contract the groin muscles
  • Sharp pain during exercise
  • There will be a visible lump on groin muscles
  • Pain when stretching

Treament for Groin Strain

The level or grade of strain must be determined before administering any treatment, some of the treament options for a goin strain includes

Stopping training

You need to stop training immediately you suffer a groin strain, stressing the muscles further will complicated the condition the more.

Ice park and hot compresses

Apply an ice park over the affected area and leave it for 20 mins, continue this for 48 hours or 2 days. After the second day apply a hot compress (this can be achieved by dipping a towel in hot water and squeezing tightly to get rid of excess water) over the affected area and leave for 20 mins, alternatively you can take a hot bath.


Proper rest is required to relax the muscles and tendons, in order to ease the pressure and strain, and also allow the healing process to take place.


There are prescribed medications that can be taken like pain killers, muscles relaxants and some special lotion or cream for pulled muscle, to help the healing process.
