Stabbing Pain in Ear

| June 10, 2012

A stabbing pain in the chest is a sign that sometime is wrong in either the three different section of the ear; the outer ear, middle ear and the inner ear. This usually occurs due to infection in the ear or it could be as a result of a referred pain. When the ear pain is caused by a problem in another part of the body, it’s called a referred pain.

Causes of Ear Pain

Stabbing pain in ear is common amongst people of different ages and can be caused by different problems, some of which are discussed below

Infection

Ear infection is one of the most common cause of ear pain, it can occur in the three different section of the ear. Ear infection usually occur as a result of trapped fluid in the ear, which gets way for bacteria to enter and multiply, thereby causing infection.

Traumatic Injury

When there is an injury in the ear drum like an accident or trauma on the side of the head, insertion of foreign objects into the ear which can cause perforation in the ear drum, a sudden change in pressure which can cause damage to the ear drum, it can lead to a stabbing pain in ear.

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorder

This is the jaw joint which can be found in front of both side of the ear. Any problem or damage to this joint can cause stabbing pain in the ear and even when chewing. This can make you unable to eat because of the pain associated with every bit. This type of pain is a referred pain.

Blockage In The Ear Canal

Ear wax is produced in the ear canal as a form of protection from dust, infection and other harmful substance, but when there is an accumulation of ear wax it can act as a plug in the ear thereby causing ear pain. This is usually accompanied by tinnitus, itching and temporary hearing loss. Blockage in the canal can also be caused by foreign objects like marble, bead or insects.

Other Causes

There are other factors which can cause stabbing ear pain like

  • An irritated skin inside the ear due to the insertion of cotton swab thereby causing ear pain .
  • Upper respiratory tract infection which can also cause irritation thereby leading to pain in the throat and ear.
  • Dental disorders like toothache can sometime be reflected in the ear which causes ear pain.
