Sudden Knee Pain

| June 30, 2012

Sudden knee pain, also known as acute knee pain, is a frequent complaint, especially for middle aged people. Injuries and stress within the knee joint are a few more common causes of sudden knee pain in adults and children. In elderly people, knee pain could be response to arthritis, gout or overuse of the knee joint.

Sudden Knee Pain – Causes and Treatment

Knee Dislocation

Knee dislocation is a medical emergency and may be treated in the earliest. Knee dislocation means dislocation of your kneecap which is located between the foreleg and the thigh. Kneecap, also known as patella, is a triangular shaped bone and kneecap dislocation causes this bone to slip into the side. Kneecap dislocation is very painful and it occurs when there’s sudden trauma, because of an excessive amount of pressure put on the knee joint. Sudden knee pain and swelling are classified as the indication of kneecap dislocation. Knee dislocation needs urgent medical attention, and the kneecap should be relocated as soon as possible.

Strain and Sprain

This is also referred as muscle pull and it occurs when there’s excessive stress and overuse in the knee joint. Sometimes, knee joint muscle pull can take place while performing exercises which entail knee stretching. Sudden knee pain, soreness and tenderness, are frequent indication of knee strain. Knee sprain is a disorder of the ligament within the knee joint. The knee joint consist of four unique variations of ligaments in the knee joint, which are, the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), lateral collateral ligament (LCL) and medial collateral ligament (MCL). Thus, a knee sprain is a consequence of sudden twist or wrench motions that slightly causes stretches or tears within the ligaments.

Gout is an intense severe pain in any joint within the body, this may include the top toe joint, knees, ankles, wrists, etc. Though gout mostly affects the large toe joint, this can possibly cause sudden and severe pain in the knee joint. Gout is basically a direct result of an accumulation of urate crystals in a joint. These urate crystals are formed due to an increase of the crystals levels in the blood. Urates is actually the waste product formed after metabolism of purine, which is present in particular food items. These urate crystals cause redness, swelling and tenderness in the affected joint and bring about severe acute pain, usually during night. Health experts recommend a minimal purine diet to counteract the gout attacks.

Another cause of sudden knee pain is fracture on the bone within the knee joint. Fracture of your knee can cause fracture of patella, femur or even the tibia. Sudden fall on the knee, is among the list of common reasons leading to knee fracture. Knee fracture has similar symptoms as knee sprain thus knee fracture often goes unnoticed and is mistaken as ligament tear. Minor knee bone fractures may be treatable with casting, while severe fractures might require surgery.
