Tightness in Chest and Shortness of Breath

A medical condition related to the heart and lungs could cause tightness in chest and shortness of breath. Although people can also experience these symptoms due a strenuous exercise or any physical activity, when the tightness in chest and shortness of breath is severe and also accompanied by other symptoms like chest pain, an immediate medical attention is required.

Causes of tightness in chest and shortness in breath

These symptoms are cause by many health problems or ailments, which includes the following

Allergies

This is an allergic reaction to different allergens, like enviromental allergens which includes dust particles, pollen and etc. This condition can cause tightness in chest and shortness of breath.

Bronchitis

This is an inflammation of the mucus membrane of the bronchi, thereby causing the narrowing of the bronchioles. This condition can be acute or chronic. The acute stage is caused by a viral infection while the chronic stage develops as a result of excessive smoking.

Asthma

This occurs due to the narrowing of the airway passages, thereby causing shortness of breath and tightening in the chest. This can be triggered by allergens or physical activity like running,crying and is also a major cause of tightness in chest and shortness of breath in children.

Emphysema

This is a chronic disorders, which occurs due to a damage in the lung tissues of the bronchioles, which stops the air flow and making it to be trapped in the lungs. This can cause tightness in chest and shortness of breath.

Pleurisy

This is an inflammation of the pleura, the membrane that covers the lungs, due to viral infection thereby causing a shortness of breath along with a sharp chest pain and cough.

Heart Attack

This occurs when there is an insufficient supply of oxygen to the heart muscles, due to a blockage in the arteries, making the heart muscles to detoriate and die off. This is a chronic cardiac disorder and is accompanied by shortness of breath, tightness in chest, sudden pain in the chest, arm, back and shoulder.

Angina

This is also a symptom of stroke and heart attack, which also occurs due an insufficient supply of oxygen to the heart muscles, due to the narrowing of the coronary arteries. This also causes severe chest, back, arm and shoulder pain along with shortness of breath.

Other Causes

There are other health disorders which causes shortness of breath and tightness in chest, this includes pneumothorax, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, sleep apnea, sleep paralysis and panic attacks.
